YEAR BUILT: 1891 (wood from Hadley farm)

REMODELED: Due to fire in 1937, third story removed; now is being refurbished by present owners.

ARCHITECTURE: Basic style of 19th century Queen Anne scroll work, one of the finest examples of Victorian Gingerbread in the area; 2 story with balcony and verandah; 8' beveled glass front window and door; beautiful staircase; fireplaces with two grates and small firebox for burning coal.

PAST OWNERS AND/OR RESIDENTS: George Bell; Enil Mills; Charles and Elizabeth Evans Johnson; Caroline Johnson; William J. and Sheri Powell Friel; Kenneth and Katherine Hays.

NOTEWORTHY: It is known as "Plainfield's first all modern house" with running water and a bathroom (gravity flow water pumped from cistern in yard to holding tank in attic). The house was originally surrounded by a wrought iron fence. Oscar Hadley, son of Elias Hadley, was a cattle breeder, president of Standard Livestock Co. (1908), and state treasurer. George Bell organized Citizens Bank. Caroline Johnson, a long time pianist for the Plainfield Christian Church, lived her entire life in this historical home.
